In this 10 Eyewitness News report, Nick Slade shares the breakthrough discovery by University of Melbourne scientists regarding a simple test to predict preterm births, featuring insights from parents and medical experts.
Nick Slade (Reporter): Scientists at the University of Melbourne have discovered a simple test, which if done during pregnancy, could dramatically reduce the number of premature babies, and as Nick Slade explains, expectant mothers could soon have access to the groundbreaking procedure.
Safely tucked away in a special care nursery, baby Zali arrived nine weeks earlier than parents Danielle and James had anticipated.
Danielle (Parent): When I went into labor, I was obviously just so concerned that it was too early, and yeah, lots of tears.
Nick Slade (Reporter): A new bedside test could hold the key to accurately predicting the potential risk of preterm birth, giving doctors the chance to intervene. "I think first and foremost, it's most important that a baby is delivered in an appropriate facility for neonatal care. So that's really important."
Researchers have identified specific chemical changes in cervical fluid that appear to signal the start of early labor. "So we've actually narrowed it down to a series of proteins that we think are very important in labor that predate the actual onset of labor."
Nick Slade (Reporter): All going well, it's hoped a simple swab test will be available to obstetricians within the next five years as part of their routine antenatal care. Premature birth accounts for 85% of early infant deaths worldwide.
"The thing with preterm birth is that there's not always a good outcome. I've talked about the risk of death and disability, but there are some babies, as I say, that don't survive, despite all the wonderful advances that we have in the world of neonatology."
